Saint-Malo ramparts

Take a walk along the ramparts built in the 17th century around the city.  The rampart walk overlooks the sea from a height of 10 metres.

Head for the "Grande Porte" where you will find Notre Dame de Bon Secours, protector of the town for centuries.  Admire the former shipowners' residences near Porte de Dinan and Porte de la Marine and continue your visit behind the walled town of Saint Malo.

Beaches in Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo also boasts a 29 kilometre stretch of coastline and 11 sandy beaches ideal for relaxing.  The Bon secours beach, la Môle beach and l'Eventail beach overlooking Fort National are located at the foot of the ramparts.

History

Over the centuries, Saint Malo has fervently defended its independence.  Attacked a number of times by the English, between 1693 and 1695 the city built fortifications and expanded to become what it is today.

In 1944, the town played a major role in the "Atlantic Wall" fortifications built by the Germans and was bombed in August 1944.
